The secret code of the Odyssey; did the Greeks sail the Atlantic?
Published in Unknown Binding by Abelard-Schuman ()
Author: Gilbert Pillot
Average review score:

I ... found it wonderful...... !!!!!
I read the spanish translation, and i also found it wonderful. That the Cyclop country is the Canary islands, Eolia island is
really Madeira; Ogygia is really Iceland, the lestrigon and cy-
merian countrys are really in Ireland... Circe's island Eea is
in the Hebrides (Scotland)... is sow wonderfull... and dhe book
in general is very convincing... I LOVE IT VERY MUCH !!!

A great theory on the true meaning of Oddyssey
The way Pillot analyzes the route that Ullusse followed to get back to his island and wife (after the end of the Trojan war), is so convincing, that after completing reading this book, I felt very much sure that his theory is correct. The writer believes that the real purpose of Oddyssey is to be used as a guideline for the Greeks on how to travel to the north Atlantic islands, written in a coded way so that other nations could not understand it. Thus , all info are hidden inside the book, under mythological cover and poetic words. Pillot manages to bring this info on the surface, to decode Oddyssey and finally describe in details the hero's long trip to Ithaca. This book is definitely suggested for any one who loves ancient Greek history-mythology and admires ancient Greek culture and civilization.

Secrets of the Ocean Realm
Published in Hardcover by Carroll & Graf (01 November, 1997)
Authors: Michele Hall, Howard Hall, and Peter Benchley
Average review score:

A poetic underwater journey!
Stare at the beautiful underwater photographs. Sitback, relax and gently discover the Ocean Realm with the still images of Howard Hall and his wife Michele, images that, as Peter Benchley (Jaws, The Deep) writes in the foreword, are among the finest in the world. Dive. Wander through the Kelp forests of the northern Pacific. Get a close-up of sharks and squids in magic detail. Enjoy the vivid colors of the reef and watch lobsters and sea turtles, dolphins and whales in an exciting photographic journey! Since this book is not a reference work, you will also enjoy reading it slowly and in the direction of your choice, diving at pleasure through the light text that describes the Hall's adventures as filmmakers and marine photographers. And then you will also find some information about the sea-life captured in the images and poetic hints about scuba-diving and underwater photography. A nice dive, a pleasant reading and, at the price that Amazon.com is offering it, a real gift. Buy the book!

A Must Read for Fin Fans!
For those of us who read everything we can on underwater photography, this book provides an added dimension and delightful reprieve from the technical how-to's of most underwater photography books. This book is a series of fascinating stories about the adventures and mis-adventures Howard and Michelle and their staff encountered when shooting different subjects. A fascinating and stimulating book, it provides anecdotal insight into how they approach certain projects without dwelling on the technical "how to's" found in most underwater photography books. Everyone studying underwater photography or just enjoying the sport of diving should surface long enough to give themselves this present. It sure made me want to grab my fins and camera and head off to points all around the world. Thanks to Howard and Michelle for putting together such a compelling read. And of course, it has beautiful photographs.

South Bay Trails: Outdoor Adventures in & Around Santa Clara Valley: From the Diablo Range to the Pacific Ocean
Published in Paperback by Wilderness Press (November, 2001)
Authors: Jean Rusmore, Frances Spangle, and Betsy Crowder
Average review score:

Almost as fun as the hikes themselves!
This is a wonderful book that goes into great deatil about the many trails in and around the South Bay. It breaks down the area by specific parks and then suggested hikes, including mileage, elevation loss or gain, and time. It even has a neat little appendix outlining hikes by category (ie., short hikes, hikes to see spring flowers, etc.) The text is detailed, explaining what you will find around every bend, and the historical information on the parks is very interesting. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to get out and away from the hustle and bustle of Silicon Valley.

A good book made better
I just replaced my battered copy of the first edition with the latest, third one, and it's a real winner! These authors' books are always educational, interesting and complete. And best of all they lead one into many fine hiking adventures around the bay. I've spent many a fine summer day following their instructions. It's about time they put out a new edition, because of all the new parks and trails they had to cover. Recommended!

This Is the Ocean
Published in School & Library Binding by Boyds Mills Pr (February, 2001)
Author: Kersten Hamilton
Average review score:

An Ocean of Information for the Very Young
Have you ever tried to explain the water cycle to little ones who ask where does the rain comes from? Kersten Hamilton has taken this sometimes confusing subject and made it easy for youngsters to understand, taking them through the process step by step. Her rhyming text, full of imagery and expressive detail, begins with the ocean and the bright sun that raises a mist to the sky and continues on to clouds and rain, explaining each step until the water from rivers and streams slips back into the ocean to begin the cycle all over again. Lorianne Siomades bold, colorful illustrations are charming and add just the right touch. Perfect for children 3-7, This is the Ocean is a fascinating and engaging picture book.

The Water Cycle explained for the young.
This is the Ocean is a readable fun journey through the water cycle. It is an excellant resource for anyone teaching the young about how water moves from the ocean to the clouds to the rivers and back to the ocean. It is written in lyric poetry, almost a song of water. The illustrations are simple, bright and engaging. I would recommend this book not only to school teachers but to all the other important teachers in a child's life.

The Titanic (Cornerstones of Freedom)
Published in School & Library Binding by Children's Book Press (October, 1993)
Author: Deborah Kent
Average review score:

An excellent brief juvenile history of H.M.S. Titanic
I found it interesting that on page 26 of Deborah Kent's volume on "The Titanic" for the Cornerstones of Freedom series there is diagram of the Titanic's final hours sketched by a passenger on the rescue ship Carpathia based on the descriptions of Jack Thayer, a 17-year old who was on the ship the night it sank. This book came out after the wreckage was discovered on the ocean floor but before the blockbuster film was released, but one of the "new" things in the movie was how the boat broke in half. However, this diagram clearly shows that to be the case and represents exactly what we saw in James Cameron's film. Consequently, this 1993 volume is more accurate than most of what students might find if they research the real story in their school library.

Kent relates the basic story paying more attention to the key details of the ship and its fateful collision and less on the individual stories, although several of the most famous ones are included and Thayer is a constant focus (which makes sense because, like the targeted readers, he was a young student). "The Titanic" has dozens of contemporary photographs of the ship and its passengers, along with some of the earliest paintings of the ship's sinking. There are plenty of books out there that go into considerably more detail, which is easy being hundreds of pages longer, but this one provides the essentials and is a good place to start on a research project.

A good account of the tragedy for strong readers (kids).
This book gave an accurate account of the tragedy in 1912. Young children who are beginners will have difficulty reading this story. I feel it is geared towards experienced readers in grades 2, 3, and 4 at least. It is a hot commodity in my school! The photos are excellent. I recommend it!

The Titanic Disaster: As Reported in the British National Press April-July 1912
Published in Hardcover by W.W. Norton & Company (April, 1997)
Author: Dave Bryceson
Average review score:

You're back in 1912 reading the headlines!! Wonderful!!
This book is great reading, informative and historical. Since the author uses the actual headlines and articles from the newspapers of 1912 you can't help but feel you are traveling through time. The accounts of survivors are heart wrenching and the survivors of those lost, even more so. The inquiries are most interesting and politics never change, do they? I love this book!

Read the history as it occured more than eighty years ago.
Many books have been written on the Titanic. Most of them describe the event like an historical fact, with the advance knowledge of the events and its outcome. Nevertheless, few describe to the emotions and the opinion of the people who lived those moments and how they were observed by the public. Through journalistic notes of the British press, the author of this book, Dave Bryceson, presents a compilation of the news about the wreck and the events that followed it(the rescue, the trials, the support collects for the victims). This it is an excellent book that makes you feel the disaster in all detail, in the human perspective provided by the newspapers. Definitively a book that must be in the collection of every Titanic fan.

Titanic: Sinking the Myths
Published in Paperback by Katco Literary Group (01 September, 1995)
Author: D.E. Bristow
Average review score:

A must have for people interested in the Titanic.
This is not your run of the mill book about the Titanic. It offers new insights as to why the ship sank so quickly and why ships close by did not go to the the aid of the sinking Titanic. Excellent research and documentation. Every Titanic buff must get this book. I have read over 14 books on the Titanic and this is one of the top two or three.

The most intelligent explanation for the disaster
Throw away all your other Titanic theory books. TITANIC: SINKING THE MYTHS is the only book I have ever read on the subject that actually explains why people behaved the way they did before and during the TITANIC disaster. Sorry, there are no 'conspiracies' here; Ms. Bristow, an ex-stewardess and friend of many sea captains, enumerates the instances of arrogance, stupidity, and shortsightedness that led to the unnecessary loss of 1522 lives. For the fact is, everyone on the ship could have been saved. By looking at the people's behaviour IN THE CONTEXT OF THEIR TIME Ms. Brisow explains what seem (to a 1990's reader) inexplicable actions. A long-forgotten shipwreck (to us, but not to the particpants in the TITANIC drama) influenced the behaviour of the radio men and probably of the ship's owner, Bruce Ismay, during the disaster. The famous Mystery Ships (two of them) were never a mystery at all; their names come straight from the records of the British Inquiry into the disaster and have been 'hid in plain sight' for 85 years. Ms. Bristow's analysis of company policy for steamships of that era and of the skulduggery behind the formation of the Marconi Company (one of the VILLAINS of the piece!) make fascinating reading. Her arguments are extremely convincing. The author's weaknesses include a tendency to repeat herself, and a noticeable resentment toward the "Titanic Establishment", whatever that is; they apparently don't countenance her arguments in any way. Still, they make sense, which is more than some other TITANIC-theory books do. The causes of the disaster are firmly rooted in the customs and historical trends of the time. Sadly, these influences are not unique to that period and the reader of this book will certainly be able to recognize more modern examples of petrified bureauocracy and inefficient planning. They say that generals are always preparing for the last war. TITANIC: SINKING THE MYTHS proves that you cannot plan for the last shipwreck.

Tracks in the Sea : Matthew Fontaine Maury and the Mapping of the Oceans
Published in Paperback by International Marine/Ragged Mountain Press (15 September, 2003)
Authors: Chester G. Hearn and Chester Hearn
Average review score:

Interesting Life Story of a Neglected American Genius
Maury's life, rising from the humble origins of a farming family in Virginia and then Tennessee, to a career as an internationally renowned scientist, is quite interesting, and generally well told by author Chester Hearn. Most scientists would feel their careers were a success if they made a few contributions to their area of science. Maury's genius invented two whole sciences: oceanography and marine astronomy. He significantly improved navigation by finding "tracks in the sea," the patterns which numerous currents and winds follow all over the globe. Perhaps because he sided with the Confederacy in the Civil War, he became a relatively obscure figure. Since he had an enduring influence on the human race's knowledge of the oceans, he deserves to be better known. This book will help, and is well worth reading.

Rich historical perspective
This is a great book for anyone with an interest in or passion for sailing, navigation, mapping and charting or who holds an interest in the challenges of early explorers.

Two girls, two catamarans
Published in Unknown Binding by Abelard-Schuman ()
Author: James Wharram
Average review score:

Back in print
This interesting little time capsule is back in print in a handsome new edition with many new photographs.

A book that works on so many levels
This recently reprinted volume is (in either edition) a remarkable document. It tells the true tale of 1950s adventure wherein a young man on a tight budget and his lady loves create "Tangaroa". This is the first of a long line of successful ocean-going catamarans, and they sail it across Biscay in heavy weather, then on from the Canaries across the Atlantic.

The first multihull two-way Atlantic crossing, no less....

The author's directness exposes for all to see the feelings and fears experienced in their undertaking. It feels to me so much like being there.

We are then shown in graphic detail the deficiencies of that first design. This is not only unusual, it is almost unprecedented in design circles, and reflects warranted confidence in the subsequent work.

For those interested in seaworthy boat design and development we are granted an intimate view of the design process wherein the second boat "Rongo" is designed and built before the return trip via New York to the UK.

"Rongo" is a remarkable design, and clear echoes of the concept are still to be seen in the latest from James Wharram Designs. Materials and structures have taken advantage of advances down the years, and rigs have evolved remarkably, but Rongo is the parent from whom all the Wharram family has sprung.

Of course, I am biased. Having built one of these boats (Tiki 30) from plans, how else could I feel? They are truly remarkable.

The book however, is accessible to all, you don't have to be a salty dog to enjoy the adventures, the triumph in the face of adversity and refutation of much uninformed criticism.

Highly recommended.
